Musings on a Broken System

I spend a fair amount of time travelling the country and observing different hospitals and physician practices. As with any industry sector a lot of variation in the prosperity of an organization comes down to the organizational harmony created by leadership.

Healthcare presents so many challenges to fostering harmony. Notably physicians, hospitals and payors all have incentives that come at each others’ expense. There is so much opportunity in creating environments that promote better patient care through the correct alignment of these incentives.

My hope is that with all of the activity surrounding Accountable Care Organizations (ACO’s), Healthcare IT Reform and Payment Reform, that the industry can find ways to promote organizational prosperity not only for the best funded health systems in the country, but also for those that are struggling to meet the demands of their markets.
